										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="">For most of recorded history, the value of human work has been more than a way to earn a living. It has been the bedrock of political voice, a source of leverage over those in power, and often the reason rights could be demanded and defended at all. In periods when workers were scarce, wages tended to rise, bargaining power increased, and whole societies recalibrated their social contracts. When labor was plentiful and cheap, those same rights often stalled or eroded.</p>



<p class="">Now, we face something entirely new. Artificial intelligence has the potential to create a vast surplus of labor capacity without adding a single human being. Not by sending more people into the workforce, but by building machines that can do much of what we do — in some cases faster, cheaper, and at scale. This is not the cyclical slack of a recession or the temporary oversupply of a migration wave. If it happens at the breadth many anticipate, it will be the first sustained, technology-driven abundance of “workers” in history.</p>



<p class="">The immediate fear is job loss. The deeper problem is what happens to rights when the economic and political bargaining power that has historically protected them begins to vanish. Constitutions and laws may proclaim rights, but in practice, they are enforced by people who have the means to insist on them. If those means weaken, so might the rights themselves.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Core Economic Loop</h2>



<p class="">Stripped to its essentials, there are three ways the relationship between AI, labor, and rights can play out:</p>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Substitution-Dominant</strong> — AI replaces a large share of human work, reducing labor demand and bargaining power. Without deliberate intervention, rights risk erosion.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Augmentation-Dominant</strong> — AI primarily enhances rather than replaces human labor, increasing productivity and resources to strengthen rights.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Institutional Decoupling</strong> — Rights are maintained through laws, political structures, or cultural norms that no longer depend on labor market conditions.</li>
</ol>



<p class="">These three outcomes form a kind of closed loop within the economic frame: any AI-labor scenario can be described as living inside one of these states, moving between them, or existing as a hybrid of more than one. A profession might start in augmentation, shift toward substitution as AI capabilities advance, and then be stabilized through institutional protections. The direction and speed of those shifts will determine the long-term balance of power.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Beyond the Economic Frame</h2>



<p class="">But rights are not only shaped by labor markets. Other pathways exist — and to ignore them is to miss the full picture.</p>



<ol start="4" class="wp-block-list">
<li class=""><strong>Alternative Power-Base Dominance</strong> — A population may retain rights through non-economic leverage: civilian arms ownership, mass mobilization capacity, control over critical physical infrastructure, or even distributed digital capabilities such as encryption and autonomous drones. In this state, bargaining power comes not from economic indispensability but from the ability to impose costs on those who would curtail rights.</li>



<li class=""><strong>Supersession</strong> — Rights do not erode; they are overtaken by entirely new governance systems in which the old rights frameworks no longer apply. This could be corporate AI governance supplanting state authority, or autonomous systems enforcing order without reference to human law.</li>
</ol>

<p class="">By setting these two additional states alongside the economic loop, we acknowledge that rights can survive or fail for reasons outside of wages, productivity, and bargaining power. They can be maintained by raw coercive potential in the hands of the population, or rendered irrelevant if the very structure of authority changes.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What This Series Will Do</h2>



<p class="">Over the chapters ahead, we will test each of these states — not as predictions, but as possibilities. We will examine the historical record of labor scarcity and abundance, and the conditions under which each led to rights expansion or contraction. We will look at how AI changes the mechanics of substitution and augmentation, and what it would take for institutional decoupling to work in practice. We will explore how alternative power bases can preserve rights, and whether supersession is a serious risk or science fiction.</p>



<p class="">The aim is not to insist on a single future, but to map the terrain so clearly that when the future arrives, we will recognize which path we are on. Its author, Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, was a French judge, man of letters, and political philosopher, who contributed significantly to the Enlightenment era&#8217;s discourse on law and government.</p>

Montesquieu&#8217;s primary objective is to analyze the various systems of laws throughout history and the influences upon them. In this article we explore thematic similarities between these two parts of the Bible.  We will demonstrate thematic similarities and foreshadowing the Gospels in Jonah.</p>

<p>The book of Jonah tells the story of a reluctant prophet who is called by God to preach to the people of Nineveh, a city known for its wickedness. Jonah initially refuses to obey God and attempts to flee by boarding a ship bound for Tarshish. However, God sends a great storm that threatens to sink the ship, and Jonah is thrown overboard and swallowed by a great fish. After three days in the belly of the fish, Jonah is vomited up on the shore and finally goes to Nineveh to deliver God&#8217;s message of judgment.</p>

<p>The Gospels, on the other hand, tell the story of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who was sent to save the world from sin and death. Like Jonah, Jesus is initially rejected by the people he came to save. He is betrayed by one of his own disciples, arrested, and sentenced to death by the Roman authorities. However, through his death and resurrection, Jesus offers the opportunity for forgiveness and eternal life to all who believe in him.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Thematic Similarities</h2>



<p>Despite the differences in the stories, there are several thematic similarities between the book of Jonah and the Gospels. One is the idea of repentance and salvation. In Jonah, the people of Nineveh repent of their wickedness and turn to God, leading to their salvation from judgment. Similarly, in the Gospels, Jesus calls on people to repent and believe in him in order to be saved from sin and death.</p>



<p>This theme is highlighted in Luke 5:32, where Jesus says, &#8220;I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.&#8221; Similarly, in Matthew 9:13, Jesus says, &#8220;But go and learn what this means: &#8216;I desire mercy and not sacrifice.&#8217; For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.&#8221;</p>



<p>Another thematic similarity between Jonah and the Gospels is the idea of obedience to God&#8217;s will. In Jonah, the prophet is called by God to preach to the people of Nineveh, but initially disobeys and attempts to flee. However, after being swallowed by the great fish, Jonah finally obeys and delivers God&#8217;s message to the people of Nineveh.</p>



<p>Similarly, in the Gospels, Jesus is portrayed as obedient to the will of God, even to the point of death. In John 5:30, Jesus says, &#8220;I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and my judgment is righteous, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the Father who sent me.&#8221; This theme is also highlighted in the Lord&#8217;s Prayer, where Jesus prays, &#8220;Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven&#8221; (Matthew 6:10).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Foreshadowing</h2>



<p>In addition to the thematic similarities, there are also several instances of foreshadowing in the book of Jonah that anticipate events in the Gospels. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Three days</h3>



<p>One of the most notable examples is the story of Jonah being swallowed by the great fish. In Matthew 12:40, Jesus says, &#8220;For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.&#8221; Here, Jesus is referring to his own death and resurrection, which is foreshadowed by Jonah&#8217;s time in the belly of the fish. Just as Jonah emerged from the fish after three days, so too did Jesus emerge from the tomb after three days.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Repentance and humility</h3>



<p>Another example of foreshadowing can be found in the story of Jonah&#8217;s mission to Nineveh. In Jonah 3:5-6, we read, &#8220;The people of Nineveh believed God. They proclaimed a fast and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.&#8221; This response of repentance and humility is echoed in the Gospels, where we see people responding in a similar way to the message of Jesus.  Coincidentally there is a similar example of redemptive love found in the book of <a href="https://betterbiblos.com/2023/02/11/uncovering-redemptive-love-in-the-book-of-ruth/" title="Uncovering Redemptive Love in the Book of Ruth">Ruth</a>.</p>



<p>For example, in Matthew 3:5-6, we read about people coming to John the Baptist and confessing their sins, saying, &#8220;I have sinned against heaven and against you.&#8221; Similarly, in Luke 7:36-50, we read about a woman who washes Jesus&#8217; feet with her tears and anoints them with perfume, showing her deep repentance and devotion to him.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">God&#8217;s mystifying love</h3>



<p>Finally, there is a striking similarity between the ending of the book of Jonah and the mission of Jesus. In Jonah 4:2, we read, &#8220;O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.&#8221; Here, Jonah is expressing his frustration and disappointment that God has shown mercy to the people of Nineveh, despite their wickedness.</p>



<p>Similarly, in the Gospels, we see the religious leaders of the time expressing similar sentiments towards Jesus, who they saw as a threat to their authority. In John 11:48, we read, &#8220;If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.&#8221; This fear of losing their power and influence ultimately led to the crucifixion of Jesus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Concluding thoughts</h2>



<p>In conclusion, the book of Jonah and the Gospels share several thematic similarities and instances of foreshadowing that point towards the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Both stories emphasize the need for repentance and obedience to God&#8217;s will, and anticipate the coming of the Messiah who would offer salvation to all who believe in him. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="https://betterbiblos.com/resources/king-james-bible/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="King James Bible">The Book of Ruth</a> is a beautifully written narrative that brings to light the redemptive nature of God, as seen through the lives of two women of vastly different backgrounds &#8211; Ruth, a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moab" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="Moabite">Moabite</a>, and Naomi, an Israelite. Through this story, God’s love and grace extends beyond the boundaries of ethnicity, religion, and social status.  God offers Salvation and a new identity to all who believe in Him.  Thus the book is a chronological, genealogical, and thematic link to the coming New Testament Gospels.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Background behind the Book of Ruth</h2>



<p>The narrative takes place during a time of social, economic, and spiritual decline for the Israeli people. Famine struck their land, causing many to leave their homes in search of sustenance. Naomi, along with her husband and two sons, left Bethlehem to seek refuge in Moab.</p>



<p>In Moab, Naomi’s sons marry two Moabite women &#8211; Ruth and Orpah. Tragically, both of her sons die, leaving behind the three widows. Naomi decides to return to Bethlehem, urging her daughters-in-law to return to their families in Moab and remarry. After some convincing, Orpah leaves to return to Moab.  Ruth, however, chooses to stay with her mother-in-law.  She declares her loyalty and love for her with the famous words, “Where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.” (Ruth 1:16).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Redemption in the Book of Ruth</h2>



<p>Ruth’s commitment to Naomi and her God is a beautiful illustration of the redemptive work of God in the lives of those who believe in Him. Ruth’s choice to leave her family, culture, and religion to follow Naomi and her God was a powerful statement of faith and trust in the One to come. Her actions demonstrate the transformative power of God’s love.  God&#8217;s love breaks down the barriers separating people and draws them together into a new family of believers.</p>



<p>Ruth’s story highlights the significance of women and kinsman-redeemers in Jewish society and culture. Ruth was a stranger and an outsider to the people of Bethlehem.  Through her marriage to Boaz she becomes a part of the community and is welcomed into the family of God. Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s deceased husband, hints at the coming Messiah.  His behavior redeems Ruth and secures her place in God’s family.</p>



<p>This redemptive aspect of the Book of Ruth is further emphasized by its placement in the Biblical canon.  It is one of the Old Testament books that points towards the coming of Jesus Christ. In Jesus, we see ultimate fulfillment of the role of kinsman-redeemer.  He saves us from our sins and make us part of His family. Through His death and resurrection, He reconciled us to God.  This makes possible our adoption into the family of God, regardless of background, ethnicity, or religion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">God&#8217;s Transformative Love</h2>



<p>Ruth is a beautiful and illustrative Book of the redemptive and transformative nature of God&#8217;s love. Through this story, we see God’s love and grace extend beyond boundaries of ethnicity, religion, and social status.  God offers salvation and a new identity to all who believe in Him. This narrative reminds us of the central message of the gospel. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Luckily for us there are many tools we can use to perform exploratory data analysis (EDA) on the Bible.  <a href="https://pycaret.gitbook.io/docs/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">PyCaret</a> is a multipurpose Python platform for machine learning and data analysis.  They have a natural language processing (NLP) module in their package that we will use on our Bible dataset.  With this we will perform Bible EDA with PyCaret.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Initial Data</h2>



<p>We will start with our dataset we generated in our blog post <a href="https://betterbiblos.com/2022/05/08/transforming-the-bible-into-a-dataframe/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" title="Transforming the Bible into a Dataframe">Transforming the Bible into a Dataframe</a>.  As noted, this dataframe consists of several columns: &#8216;<strong>book</strong>&#8216; representing books of The Bible; &#8216;<strong>chapter</strong>&#8216; representing chapters, &#8216;<strong>verse_number</strong>&#8216; representing verses, and the verses&#8217; text itself is represented in the column &#8216;<strong>verse</strong>&#8216;.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Initial Setup</h2>



<p>Initial setup of the pycaret model involves importing of the pycaret.nlp package and then building a reference for the package to our dataframe, with specified target text for natural language processing.</p>

<p>The intitial setup outputs some basic descriptive information about our Bible corpus.  For one, there are 31,102 documents in our data, representing the verses of the Bible.  Our corpus consists of a 6,999 distinct vocabulary of words.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Model Selection</h2>



<p>Pycaret.nlp gives us several NLP models to deploy using a combination of the gensim and sklearn packages.  We can access the available packages using the below command:</p>

<p>We will pick LDA for our first run with the model, and can try other models later.  LDA, short for <a href="https://www.jmlr.org/papers/volume3/blei03a/blei03a.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" title="Latent Dirichlet Allocation">Latent Dirichlet Allocation</a>, was published in 2003 by the machine learning researchers David Blei, Andrew Ng, and Michael Jordan.  It was one of the first widely adopted topic modeling frameworks.  For the curious, we&#8217;ve included the abstract below:</p>



<p class="has-background" style="background-color:#c1e9fa">We describe latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), a generative probabilistic model for collections of
discrete data such as text corpora. LDA is a three-level hierarchical Bayesian model, in which each
item of a collection is modeled as a finite mixture over an underlying set of topics. Each topic is, in
turn, modeled as an infinite mixture over an underlying set of topic probabilities. In the context of
text modeling, the topic probabilities provide an explicit representation of a document. We present
efficient approximate inference techniques based on variational methods and an EM algorithm for
empirical Bayes parameter estimation. We report results in document modeling, text classification,
and collaborative filtering, comparing to a mixture of unigrams model and the probabilistic LSI
model.</p>



<p>PyCaret makes the creation of the model easy, we will see just how easy in the next section.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Running the model</h2>



<p>One can create a model with one line of code, once they have initialized the pycaret.nlp package and pointed it to the relevant corpus.</p>

<p>The print statement has outputted several relevant features for understanding the model created using LDA.  In totality, 6999 different tokens (&#8220;words&#8221;) were considered in the model creation, and the specified default count of topics for the model is 4.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Visualizing the Topics</h2>



<p>In subsequent posts, we will explore additional visualizations and optimization of topic generation using various target parameters such as Book of the Bible.  For now we will examine the default 4 topics generated by LDA to improve our future work.</p>

<p>Topic 3 consists of a relatively medium-large variety of words, with center point of length distribution around 8-9 characters.</p>



<p>Initially we note a curious structure to the topics, they all vary considerably in terms of the highest single word count value. For topic 0 we see &#8216;give&#8217; is in the number 1 position with ~150 references, for topic 1 we see &#8216;say&#8217; is in the number 1 position with ~1400 references, for topic 2 we see &#8216;let&#8217; is in the number 1 position with 11 references, and for topic 3 we see &#8216;shall&#8217; is in the number 1 position with ~9000 references.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In this post, we will discuss how to generate a Bible Semantic Space.</p>



<p>Where we last left off in <a href="https://betterbiblos.com/2022/05/08/diving-deeper-into-bible-nlp-visualization-part-1/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Part 1 of Diving deeper into Bible NLP Visualization</a>, we used Python and created a dataframe of the <a href="https://betterbiblos.com/king-james-bible/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" title="King James Bible">King James bible text file</a> that looked like so, with books, chapters, verse numbers, and verse text separated into their own columns:</p>

<p>The dataframe is now a helpful tool for efficient information retrieval.  We can ask questions such as &#8220;how many verses are contained in Genesis?&#8221;, by referencing appropriate Python filters and groupby statements with correspondingly appropriate aggregations.  However, we need to do more work on the dataframe in order to visualize semantic meaning effectively.  We next need to generate a semantic space. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bible Semantic Space to enable Bible NLP</h2>



<p>We feed the text of the verse column into a word embedding model to generate a semantic space.  Word embedding models are tools in natural language processing to translate words and/or the context of words into vector representations so we can direct our computer to a mathematical object to analyze.  Here&#8217;s an analogy to explain the concept.  In Einsteinian physics, position is not determined by an absolute space time grid, position is <em>relative</em> to the position of other objects and their movement.  </p>

<p>Word embedding models function somewhat similarly.  Word embedding models are initially trained on massive corpus&#8217;/bodies of linguistic data.  Corpus&#8217; are datasets of combined sources such as Wikipedia, the set of all tweets, an agglomeration of the last 20 years&#8217; worth of several publishers &#8216; news articles, etc.  From this set of information meaning is extracted by way of cooccurrence of words and phrases.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Word2vec</h2>



<p>We have chosen <a href="https://radimrehurek.com/gensim/models/word2vec.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">word2vec</a> as the embedding model for our initial analysis within the <a href="https://radimrehurek.com/gensim/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">gensim</a> package. Word2vec was created in 2013 by a team of Google researchers, including Tomas Mikolov.</p>



<p>Depending upon our choice of semantic embedding model, we must utilize different preprocessing techniques to get our dataframe ready.  We will use gensim to preprocess our strings into a format most advantageous for word2vec.  Preprocessing consists of a number of techniques for manipulating your text for better machine representation, such as:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Removal of punctuation</li><li>Removal of stop words</li><li>Change case to lower</li><li>Stemming</li><li>Lemmatizing</li><li>Tokenization</li></ul>



<p>There is room for choice here, for example our selection of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_word" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" title="stopwords">stopwords</a> to eliminate  will alter the semantic space generated.  Typical stopwords eliminated include (&#8216;and&#8217;,&#8217;or&#8217;,&#8217;the&#8217;,&#8217;a&#8217;,etc.).  It is also possible with modern embedding models to include all stopwords in the corpus.  Each word is assigned a numerical token representation like below:</p>

<p>Lastly, each tokenized word is assigned a point in a N-dimensional space.  One can choose the number of dimensions they wish to use.  The general thought is that more dimensions are able to capture more sophisticated linguistic meaning.  We will be using an N of 100 for our initial runs with word2vec.  Several modern models extend their count of parameters into the billions to achieve state of the art performance.  We can see the model output below.</p>

<p>We can use dimension reduction on the above object to reduce it to 2 dimensions for interpretable plotting. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Introduction to Transforming the Bible</h2>



<p>In this first post of a series of posts about our <a href="https://betterbiblos.com/analyses/bible-nlp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" title="Bible NLP">Bible NLP Analysis</a>, we will be transforming the Bible into a dataframe. Part 1 will focus on the ingestion of the file into a broadly usable Pandas dataframe.</p>

<p>I utilized a .txt file of the King James Bible from the website <a href="https://sacred-texts.com/bib/osrc/index.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" title="sacred-texts.com">sacred-texts.com</a>. Their formatting of the file enabled for much easier ingestion of the text in a logical way than other sources I have found.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Python &amp; Bible NLP</h2>



<p>My language of choice for NLP is Python.  Python has many excellent modules to aid in various object-oriented tasks, NLP included.  Pandas is one such module in the data science realm.  One can find links to many of the resources I utilize here on the Better Biblos <a href="https://betterbiblos.com/resources/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" title="Resources">resources</a> page.  In addition to many other functions, Pandas allows for easy ingestion of the .txt file using:</p>

<p>Inspecting the object using bible.head() we observe the following tabular structure:</p>

<p>Not too bad, but we can utilize the logical structure of the Bible into books, chapters, and verses to create a more accessible object. In particular we will focus on the pipe (&#8220;|&#8221;) delimiter character nicely included in the file, and then force name the automatically generated columns from the .split command in line 1 below:<br></p>
